Spring, 2018-Reflection....
The Fall semester was a little rough for me as I had my first experience with poor student evaluations and that rocked me to my core.I read through them and took out topics and/or areas that I had control over so that I could provide better teaching practices. So, during the spring semester I planned to be more intentional about all things successful teaching. I have been reading and finding additional teaching resources for growing purposes. Above all, I felt that I was successful and for sure the student evaluations were much better.
The Spring semester was different emotionally/mentally, I figured because I had bonded with this semesters graduating class (Which I had). However, I realized that this was my fifth year teaching and I had become more confident in my abilities in the classroom. For instance, All syllabus were available in advance, rubrics were posted early, I developed grade sheets (for students to keep track of assignment and grades received) and I was feeling better than I ever had before.
At some point, I realized that I had agreed to present at BPD during Spring Break which meant that my children would be sad because I wasn't around. In April I had two conferences one week apart located in San Antonio which meant that I would be driving for several hours, not one of my favorite things. Both conferences were a success, I met new colleagues, learned more about old ones and added to my teaching practices.
Above all, the spring semester was different because I had stretched myself in the scholarship, teaching and service area like never before. For instance, I refined teaching practices and brought new techniques to the classroom, I was working on publications and served in some way at all conferences. ALL!! I attended and presented at five social work conferences sharing topics related to: teaching practices, tech in social work education and the importance of Professional Learning Networks. I'd say that this semester ended well, my intention is to have a summer to present internationally and to regroup for another exciting semester of learning.
